THE YOUTHS AGAINST CANCER (YAC) PROJECT

Promoting lasting healthy lifestyle

Youths Against Cancer

The program is to safeguard and promote the reproductive health and rights of women of child bearing age (15-45years).
Evidence shows that behaviours that start in adolescence can determine health and wellbeing for a lifetime.
YAC project is also an important tool for the prevention of cancer and other non-communicable diseases, such as Hypertension, Coronary Heart Diseases and Diabetes, Respira since they share common risk factors with cancer.
Cancer is rapidly emerging as a leading cause of death worldwide. More than 70% of these deaths occur in developing countries largely due lack of awareness, and late stage presentation. Cancer is often linked to an interaction between a person’s genetics, unhealthy lifestyle and environmental factors. In Sub Saharan Africa about 32% and 22% of cancer are caused by infection and tobacco use respectively.
Youths are often predispose to unhealthy lifestyle such as cigarette smoking, junk foods, obesity and risky sexually behaviors amongst others. In Nigeria cancer causing sexually transmitted viral infections such as Hepatitis B, Human Papilloma and HIV/AIDS are common among youths. However, with the healthy life style and vaccination 30% of cancer can be prevented.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

• To promote age appropriate cancer awareness prevention and control programs among adolescent girls and women.
• Prevention & Control sexually transmitted diseases (STD) including, Hepatitis B, and HPV through health education and immunization including fertility regulation.
• To train youth peers educators to help propagate the YAC message for sustainability of project.
