Breast and cervical cancers Advocacy, Awareness, Prevention & Screening Project.
Breast and cervical cancers are the two major causes of cancer- related deaths amongst women in Nigeria. More than 80% of deaths from both cancers are often due to women presenting late for treatment in advanced stage, with poor prognosis and survival rate. General lack of awareness and misconception about the cancers, poverty, socio-cultural and religious barriers as well as fear are the main causes of late presentation. Lack of knowledge about cancer prevention or screening for early detection among women is also a major contributory factor.
Majority of women have never been screened. We also observed with alarm in the past 3 years of our enlightenment campaigns the poor response to screening by even educated women who were aware of both cancers. The uninformed rural women with inadequate knowledge on the other hand regard cancer as mysterious, an act of fate, not preventable and a death sentence. The situation is worse among young females who are totally ignorant and nonchalant.
